WHEN KIDS LEARN TO READ, WE ALL SUCCEED!
Reading is a critical bridge to success in school, work and life. Until third grade, children are generally learning to read; by fourth grade, however, they should be reading to learn. At the fourth grade level, coursework gets harder and reading becomes more challenging. Students who don't read well have increasing difficulty keeping up- which can lead to bad grades, disengaging from school, and dropping out.
That's why United Way is creating and leading supportive efforts to help young kids build a strong foundation.
Our KIDS UNITED initiative consists of these programs currently serving students of Goshen, Elkhart, Prairie Heights, Lakeland, Westview and West Noble School Corporations.
Connect with students by joining a classroom to read a book and share your leadership skills, career, interests, and love of learning with local children!
An outline of the program includes:
- Reading a book in a K-2nd grade classroom
- Committing approximately 30 minutes/week for four weeks
- Selecting either (or both!) Fall and Spring sessions in Elkhart, LaGrange, and Noble County
One-on-one reading help with struggling students in January and February. Reading Camp kids need a little extra help and individual attention to catch up to their peers.
SPRING INTO READING
Share your leadership skills, career, interests, and love of learning with local children!
- Weekly sessions held in April and May
- Approximately 30 minutes per week reading with a classroom and interacting with local schoolchildren
